POPOL VUH

SUMMARY

In the beginning the only thing that existed was Heart-of-Sky and earth. Earth had no land, it was only water and sky. There is no such thing as sound or movement. Heart-of-Sky was the god that create everything. He had many names; Kukulkan, The Maker and Modeler, and Hurricane. There is nothing to praise him.

He was asking himself, "Who will praise me?" so he speaks the word "Earth" and land rises from the seas. He imagines mountains an trees and they appear. He creates creatures to live in the forest; deer, snakes, birds, jaguars. He tells the deer to sleep near the rivers. He commands the birds to nest in the trees. "Reproduce and roam!" he says. Heart-of-Sky demands the animals to worship him. All they do is make noises. They can't speak. He makes them assist the ones who will worship him.

He tries again, this time he makes man out of earth and mud. The "humans" keep crumbling when too dry and keep dripping when too wet. They become misshapen and lopsided. He stops caring for them and lets them crumble into dust.

He summons the wisest spirits, Grandfather and Grandmother spirit. The Maker and Modeler asks them "Should I craft the next humans out of wood?" The Elder spirits put their hands over coral seeds and kernels of corn.

"What shall we make that prays and nurtures?" the Grandparent Spirits ask. Four days pass until they answer The Maker and Modeler's question. They answer and tell him "It is a good idea to make your new humans with wood. They shall be able to talk. They shall be able to reproduce and go places."

"I will make them out of wood then." As The Maker and Modeler speaks the words, the new humans are made. The dolls have no blood or sweat. Their faces are always the same. They have no minds to think about worshiping The Maker and Modeler. "This is not what I thought would happen." So he then decides to destroy them.

Hurricane makes it flood. It rains all day and all night. The animals come from the forest into the buildings of the dolls. Everything starts speaking. The doll people are yelling "You took our home and now we will take yours!" as they run into the forest.

The animals scream "We will eat you because you have abused and eaten us!"

Even the grinding stones and pots speak. "We shall smash and scorch you just as you have done to our kind!" They cry out.

The dolls run into the forest, bodies smashed and faces broken. Hurricane changes them into monkeys as a punishment. That is the reason for which monkeys are so much like humans. They are all that is left of the doll people.

He makes humans out of corn dough next. The first four men are created. Kukulkan blow mist into their eyes so they couldn't see far. This test is to see their desires of becoming gods. Then the first four women were created to be the wives of the four  men. They all spoke the same language and chose to go to Tulan-Zuiva. At Tulan-Zulva they were told to worship the gods. The god of fire, Tohil, wanted them to worship him with blood. He only wanted the men's blood to be sacrificed. He wanted them to cut their ears and elbows to worship him. He then gave them fire to survive. He decided that just blood wasn't enough anymore. He made them slice their armpits and waists.

Again he decided that what they were giving him wasn't enough so he made them sacrifice other humans. He knew death was the best offering they could give him.
